Edward Hicks III, Farintina Pleshette Hicks, and Laila Nicole Hicks Remembered After Tragic Early-Morning House Fire in Birmingham, Alabama

A devastating house fire in west Birmingham claimed the lives of three family members early Wednesday morning, leaving a community in mourning.

Authorities identified the victims as 49-year-old Edward Hicks III, 48-year-old Farintina Pleshette Hicks, and their 18-year-old daughter, Laila Nicole Hicks.

Emergency crews responded around 2:00 a.m. on April 15, 2026, to a home in the Green Acres neighborhood after a neighbor reported flames.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and intense fire conditions inside the residence.

Despite rapid response efforts, all three family members suffered critical injuries and were transported to UAB Hospital, where they later passed away.

Officials noted that no working smoke detectors were present in the home, which may have affected the family’s ability to escape.

The loss deeply affected Birmingham City Schools, where Laila Hicks studied as a senior at Ramsay IB High School.

In a statement, the district shared, “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Investigators continue to examine the cause of the fire as the community reflects on the lives lost.
